As a tree surgeon, I’ve seen firsthand how Ash Dieback has affected our local trees. This fungal disease (caused by Hymenoscyphus fraxineus) is seriously impacting ash trees across the UK, and I want to help you understand what it is and what can be done.

What does it look like? The disease first shows up as dark brown/orange discoloration on leaves, which then wilt and turn black. You’ll notice diamond-shaped dark patches on branches and stems, and the crown (top) of the tree starts dying back – hence the name. Young trees can die within a few years, while mature trees may fight it for longer but become weakened and vulnerable to other problems.

Can it be treated? Unfortunately, there’s no cure for Ash Dieback. However, we can manage affected trees to help slow the spread and keep areas safe:

  • Regular monitoring of tree health
  • Removing severely affected branches or whole trees if they become dangerous
  • Clearing fallen leaves (where practical) as the fungus overwinters in them
  • Maintaining good tree health through proper care and management

Some trees show natural resistance to the disease, so we’re learning to identify and protect these specimens for future breeding programs.

If you’re concerned about ash trees on your property, it’s important to get professional advice. While some trees can be saved through careful management, others may need removal if they pose a safety risk, especially near buildings or public areas.

If you are intersted in the latest guidence, you can always check with the Forestry Commission.

Remember: Early identification and professional management are key to dealing with this challenging disease.

Here is a list of some of the tree surgeon services we offer:

We remove your tree completely to ground level. We can also remove the root bowl on request, though this incurs an extra charge. Depending on the tree’s size and location, it may have to be climbed and dismantled to complete the work safely.

We would employ various tree surgeon pruning techniques to leave you with the healthy, natural-looking trees you deserve. Here is a brief list of some options

Crown Thinning – Thins the tree while maintaining its shape

Crown Reduction – Reduces the overall size of the tree

Crown Lifting – Removes lower branches to improve views or allow access under the tree.

Dead Wooding – Removes dead branches from trees, making them safer to walk under and look better.

Pollarding – Involves removing branches from a tree, leaving a framework for regrow. It is not suitable for all trees.

We would use a stump grinder to grind the tree stump into small woodchips. This would leave you with some wood chips and dirt, which will rot down over time. The space where the root bowl was can then be used for replanting or turfed over. It is available as part of a tree removal or as a standalone service.

We provide a complete hedge service, from light trimming to complete removal. We have all the equipment and expertise to get your hedges looking great and trim those hard-to-reach areas.

As experienced tree surgeons in Manchester, we work with various commercial clients, such as nursing homes and factories, to provide complete tree management solutions. We offer a no-fuss service that helps take the hassle out of managing your trees.
